Harriet
Feminine · “home ruler”
Harriet is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 90,306 girls against 121 boys since 1880.
Harriet is the English everyday form of French Henriette, and it arrived with a royal marriage: Henrietta Maria of France became queen consort when she married Charles I in 1625, and English mouths promptly turned Henriette into Harriet. It has been shortened the same way for centuries — Hattie, Hetty — and it is still handed to newborns in Britain today.

Where it comes from
From Heimirich to Harriet
The story of Harriet
The root is Germanic: Heimirich, 'home ruler', which became Henri in France and Henry in England. French made a feminine diminutive, Henriette, and that form crossed the Channel in the seventeenth century when Henrietta Maria of France married Charles I. English speakers reshaped it as Harriet, pulling it toward the familiar Harry, and for the next two centuries Harriet and Henrietta ran side by side — the formal one on documents, the plain one in the kitchen. It traveled to America with English-speaking settlers and has been on the books there ever since the records begin.

The trade-off
- Several short forms already in real use — Hattie, Hetty, Etta — none of which need explaining.
- A spelling almost everyone can write from hearing it once, with no silent letters or optional vowels.
- An unbroken record in English since the seventeenth century, and on American birth records from the very start of them.
- Currently given to babies in England and Wales, so it is a living name abroad rather than only a historical one.
- Direct sibling of Henry and Henrietta, useful if family names run in that line.
- The American and British vowels differ — HAIR-ee-ət versus HARR-ee-ət — so expect a light, permanent variation depending on who is speaking.
- Harriett and Harriette both exist as spellings, and Henrietta sits close by, so the name will occasionally be written back at you with an extra letter.
- In the United States the name is far more strongly represented among the oldest generations than among children, which some parents love and others hesitate over.
- 'Harry' as a short form lands as a boy's name in American English, though Hattie and Hetty carry no such ambiguity.
