Where it comes from

Our story of Harrel

A harrow is a frame of spikes dragged across a ploughed field to break the clods, and the verb means to drag something roughly through something else. Medieval English used it for an event described in early Christian writing but not in the gospels: between the crucifixion and the resurrection, Christ is said to have gone down and emptied hell of the righteous dead. It was called the harrowing of hell, meaning a raid rather than a distressing experience, and it was one of the most popular subjects in medieval drama, with the devils given all the good lines. The modern sense of harrowing, meaning deeply upsetting, is a later softening of the same image.

Fashion outlook

Harrel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Harry comes off the front as a short form and needs no explaining anywhere.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • It is rare in the record while sounding entirely ordinary.
What to consider
  • Harrell and Harold are both commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
