The story of Hardie
Hardy began as a nickname for a bold man and became a surname on both sides of the border; the -ie spelling is the Scottish one. In 1892 the Scottish miners' leader James Keir Hardie was elected for West Ham South and arrived at Westminster in a tweed suit and a cap rather than the frock coat and top hat members wore, a small scandal that made him famous; he went on to lead the first Labour members in the Commons. The English spelling has its own famous moment: at Trafalgar in 1805 the dying Nelson said 'Kiss me, Hardy' to his flag captain, Thomas Hardy. The later claim that he really said 'Kismet, Hardy' is one most historians reject.
