Hamp
Masculine · “from a place called Hampton”
Hamp is what the American South did to Hampton, and Hampton is what England did to two entirely different words. The ending that closes several hundred English place names conceals a homestead in some of them and a river meadow in others, and no two Hamptons are guaranteed to mean the same thing.

The story of Hamp
The reason Southern families had the name in the first place is largely one man. Wade Hampton commanded cavalry in the Confederate army, came home to a ruined estate, and was elected governor of South Carolina in the disputed election that ended Reconstruction in that state — a campaign conducted by armed men in red shirts who broke up Republican meetings. He is remembered locally as the man who redeemed the state and nationally as part of the machinery that took the vote away from Black citizens for the better part of a century. Both accounts are about the same election, and boys called Hamp were being christened all over the South while it was happening.
Meaning
from a place called Hampton
Southampton and Northampton are not a pair. The first contains a word for a river meadow, the second a word for a homestead, and the north and south were added centuries later to tell two already-existing places apart in tax records. The same ambiguity runs through every Hampton on the map. As a first name the word arrived in America as a surname, was clipped in speech the way Southern names are, and Hamp is what was left.

Fashion outlook
Hamp sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters, one syllable, and impossible to misread or mispronounce.
- It has the plainness of the old American names that are currently coming back.
- Hampton stands behind it as a formal version for anyone who wants one.
- The best-documented namesake is a Confederate general, and that is what a search will find.
- It reads as a shortening, so people will look for a longer name.
- It is entirely out of use, so there is no model for how it wears on a child now.
