Halo is the ring of light that painters have set behind saints' heads since the early Christian centuries — and long before that, a Greek word for a disk: the sun's, the moon's, or a round threshing floor trodden flat by oxen. As a given name it is genuinely new, two clean syllables that almost nobody needs to hear twice.

Where it comes from
From halōs (Greek) to Halo
The story of Halo
Greek halōs meant a round threshing floor, then by extension the disk of the sun or moon — a circle of brightness. Latin took it as halo, and English borrowed it from Latin in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, first for the optical ring astronomers saw around the moon and then for the nimbus of light in religious painting. For centuries it stayed a common noun and nothing more. Its life as a personal name is recent and American, arriving in the same stretch of years that made the word unusually audible in English-speaking homes: the Halo video game series, launched in 2001, and Beyoncé's song 'Halo' in 2008.
Meaning

The Leeann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Halo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leeann climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leeann's path sketches the road Halo is walking now.
Halo is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Spells itself: it is an ordinary English word, so it survives phone calls, forms and roll calls without correction.
- Two syllables, both open and easy, which sits comfortably in front of most surnames.
- The same spelling works in Spanish, Portuguese and French, where the word also exists.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Hal, already an established English name on its own, and Lo.
- The word carries a strong association with saints and angels, and English has idioms to match — the halo effect, a halo slipping. Expect the occasional joke about being no angel; most bearers of word-names learn to answer it early.
- It is recorded for boys as well as girls but leans to girls, so a boy named Halo will sometimes be assumed female on paper before anyone meets him.
- Very few adults carry this name yet, so a child is likely to be the person who introduces it to teachers, coaches and grandparents rather than the second Halo they have known.
- It is climbing steadily rather than holding still, so the name may feel more familiar by the time your child reaches school than it does tonight.
