A halberd is a weapon and this name has nothing to do with it. The name joins two Germanic elements about a stone and brightness; the weapon is a different word entirely, a pole with an axe head, and the resemblance is a coincidence of four letters.

How old is the name Halbert?

Halbert first appears in US birth records in 1881 — 144 years ago. The typical Halbert alive today was born around 1942, making them about 83 years old. About 500 people named Halbert are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Halbert most popular?

Halbert peaked in 1881, reaching #866 nationally. See the whole 1881 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Halbert

The weapon deserves its own paragraph because it decided several centuries of European fighting. A halberd is an axe blade, a spike and a hook on a two-meter shaft, and a disciplined block of men holding them could stop cavalry, which nothing infantry had used before could reliably do. Swiss mercenaries built an entire national export industry on the fact, hiring themselves out across Europe for two hundred years and being feared everywhere; the Vatican guard still carries the weapon and wears the uniform. The name in this entry, which sounds like it should be part of that story, is not, and belongs instead to a rock.

Meaningscholars disagree

Bright stone

The usual reading joins a word for a rock or a stone to the very common element meaning bright or famous. Other proposals exist for the first half, and the name is rare enough that none has been settled beyond argument. The weapon's name is from quite different Germanic words meaning a handle and an axe.

HAL-burt

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is true of every name ending in this element and is why so many of them are misspelled from dictation.

Halbert sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 29 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Halbert sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Hal and Bert are two short forms a few centuries apart in flavor.
  • Short, firm and easy to spell once heard.
  • It is genuinely rare while containing nothing unfamiliar.
What to consider
  • It will be read as the weapon by anybody who knows the word.
  • The first element is not securely explained, so the meaning cannot be given flatly.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
