Gwyndolyn
Feminine · “white ring”
Welsh y is a letter with two jobs. In a stressed syllable it says the vowel of tin; anywhere else it collapses to the vowel of the. That is why Welsh names look strange to English readers and are perfectly regular to Welsh ones. Gwyndolyn puts a y where Gwendolyn has an e, which in Welsh terms is a real change and in American terms is none at all.

The story of Gwyndolyn
Gwendolen appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's history of the kings of Britain, written in the twelfth century — a book that presents itself as history and is mostly invention, and that gave Europe King Arthur, King Lear and a great deal else. His Gwendolen is a queen who defeats her husband in battle. Whether the name existed before he wrote it down is not known. It became genuinely Welsh afterward and reached English use in the nineteenth century, and the American spellings multiplied from there, this one moving the y into the first syllable where Welsh would want it.
Meaningscholars disagree
white ring, or blessed bow
The first element is the Welsh gwen or gwyn, meaning white, fair or blessed — that part is secure. The second is usually read as dolen, a ring or a link, giving something like white ring. Some read it instead as a word for a bow. Neither is settled, and the name may have been assembled by a medieval writer rather than descended from anything.

Pronouncing Gwyndolyn
GWEN-duh-lin
Three syllables, stress on the first. The y in this spelling sits in the stressed syllable and is said as a short i by American readers, which makes it identical to the e in Gwendolyn. In Welsh the two letters would not be interchangeable at all.

Line the two peaks up, and Wilmetta's path sketches the road Gwyndolyn is walking now.

The trade-off
- Three short forms are available and they belong to three different worlds.
- It has a documented twelfth-century literary origin, which is unusual and traceable.
- It is long and formal enough to give a child room to grow into it.
- The Welsh element at the front is genuine and still a living word.
- Gwendolyn is the standard spelling and will be substituted on nearly everything.
- Nine letters with a gw at the front is a lot to dictate over a phone.
- It belongs to an older American generation, though names of that generation are returning.
