Guiliana
Feminine · “of the Julian family”
In Italian the i after a g is not a vowel — it is a signal that the g is soft, the way it is in giant. Giuliana works because of that i. Move it behind the u, as this spelling does, and Italian reads the letters differently: gu before a vowel is a hard g with a w after it, as in guerra. The swap is invisible in America and changes the whole name in Italy.

The story of Guiliana
The gens Julia was one of the oldest patrician families in Rome and gave its name to a month, a calendar and eventually a title. Julianus and Juliana were common late Roman names, and several early martyrs carried the second, which is what kept it in the church calendar. Italian made Giuliana, and it has been in steady use ever since. American records show this spelling arriving in the 1990s and rising with the general American enthusiasm for Italian women's names — an enthusiasm that has produced a great many spellings that Italy itself would not write.

of the Julian family
Giuliana is the feminine of Giuliano, from the Roman family name Julius. What Julius itself meant the Romans had already forgotten: the readings offered are a link to a Greek word for downy-bearded and a descent from Jupiter, neither of them established. So the name means belonging to a family whose own name is unexplained.

Pronouncing Guiliana
joo-lee-AH-nah
Four syllables, stress on the third. That is how Americans say it and how Giuliana is said in Italy. An Italian reading this exact spelling strictly would produce gwee-lee-AH-nah, with a hard g — which is why the letter order matters more than it looks.

The Leane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Guiliana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leane climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leane's path sketches the road Guiliana is walking now.
Guiliana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three quite different short forms are available, all of them standing names.
- The Roman family behind it is among the best documented in history.
- Four open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
- It is soft throughout, with no consonant cluster anywhere.
- Giuliana is the correct Italian spelling and will be written instead by anyone who knows the language.
- The letter order technically changes the name in Italian, which relatives there will notice.
- Juliana, Giuliana and Julianna all compete, so the spelling has to be dictated.
