The story of Gorman
Ó Gormáin and Mac Gormáin are old Irish families, and the word inside both is gorm. Irish puts that word where English would not: a Black man is a fear gorm, a blue man, and the reason is that fear dubh, black man, was already taken, because it meant the devil. Politeness moved the color one step along the spectrum and it stayed there, centuries ago, and the usage is still current. Meanwhile, across the Irish Sea, the first king of a united Denmark was called Gorm. That Gorm is a Norse name with nothing blue in it whatever, unrelated by any line of descent. Two names, one shape, no connection at all, which is the ordinary condition of names and only looks like a coincidence when somebody notices.

Fashion outlook
Gorman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is spelled as it sounds and read correctly the first time by everyone who meets it.
- It has a documented Irish origin with a real word behind it, which is more than most surnames used as first names can offer.
- Two syllables and a plain stress pattern make it easy to say quickly and easy to hear across a room.
- It reads as a surname to nearly everybody, which suits some families and unsettles others.
- It is rare enough as a first name that forms and strangers will keep assuming it belongs in the other box.
- It shares an opening with a cluster of grim English words, and children notice that sort of thing well before adults do.
