Gisell is Giselle with the French silent letters removed, and the reason is phonological rather than casual. Spanish does not use a final silent e, so a French name adopted into Spanish-speaking households loses it — the same reason Michelle turns up as Michell in the same records.

Where it comes from

The story of Gisell

Gisela was a Frankish and later a German royal name — Charlemagne's sister carried it. It passed into French as Gisèle, and the 1841 ballet Giselle made it internationally famous, which is why the French spelling dominates almost everywhere. Latin America adopted it enthusiastically in the twentieth century, and Spanish orthography did what Spanish orthography does: it dropped the letters that do not sound. Gisell, Gissell and Gisel are all Spanish-facing spellings of the same name, and Gisell's 1999 American peak sits in the middle of that pattern.

Meaning

Old German "pledge, hostage"

From Old High German gisal, a pledge or a hostage — specifically a person given as surety in a treaty, which was a normal and honorable diplomatic role in early medieval Europe. The same element appears in Gisela and Gisbert. The uncomfortable modern sense of "hostage" is a poor guide to the medieval one.

jee-ZELL

Two syllables with the stress on the second. In Spanish the g before i is an H sound, giving hee-SELL, which is a genuinely different name to English ears. Both are correct depending on the household.

Gisell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 102 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Gisell went to 16 girls in 2025, but Gisel is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 33, which makes it the 927th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,911 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 48,705 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Gisell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling is shorter than Giselle without any change in sound for English speakers.
  • It has a documented Frankish royal history and a famous ballet behind it.
  • Gigi is a warm, established short form used in several languages.
What to consider
  • The initial G is said two ways depending on whether the listener reads it as English or Spanish.
  • Giselle is far more common and will be assumed and autocorrected to.
  • Gisell, Gissell, Gisel and Gizell are all in use.
