Where it comes from

The story of Gillermo

Carl Wilhelm Kahlo, born in Germany, emigrated to Mexico in 1891 and became Guillermo Kahlo, a photographer of architecture and the father of the painter Frida Kahlo. Earlier in the century William Brown, born in County Mayo, went to sea, settled in Buenos Aires and, as Guillermo Brown, commanded the new Argentine navy in the war of independence and the wars that followed; Argentina counts him as the father of its navy. Gillermo is a spelling of the same Spanish name, written as it sounds.

Meaning

A spelling of Guillermo, the Spanish William, 'resolute protector'

William joins the Germanic words for 'will, desire' and 'helmet, protection'. Spanish writes it Guillermo, with a u that keeps the g hard; Gillermo drops it.

Gillermo sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 21 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Gillermo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds exactly like Guillermo, a name known across the Spanish-speaking world.
  • The same name as William, one of the most widely used names in Europe.
  • Comes with Memo as a well-worn short form.
What to consider
  • Without the u, English readers may say JIL-er-moh; Spanish readers may expect the u.
  • Guillermo is the standard spelling, so this one will be corrected.
  • It will need spelling out on every form.
