Geoffery inserts a vowel that the standard spelling does not have, and the insertion adds a syllable on paper that most speakers do not say. It belongs to a name whose most famous holder spent his working life as a customs official, a diplomat and a clerk of the king's works, and wrote the foundation of English literature in whatever hours were left over.

Where it comes from

The story of Geoffery

Chaucer was a public servant. He was captured in France as a young man and ransomed by the king, sat in Parliament, went on diplomatic missions to Italy where he presumably encountered the writers who changed his work, and spent twelve years as controller of customs on wool in the port of London, which was a serious administrative job involving very large sums. Later he was clerk of the king's works, responsible for maintaining royal buildings, and was robbed twice in one week while carrying the payroll. The poetry was written alongside all of that. He is buried in Westminster Abbey not because he was a poet but because he held an office that came with a tenancy nearby, and the corner of the abbey now full of writers grew up around him afterwards.

peace

The second element is the Germanic word for peace and is certain. The first is not: several different Germanic names produce the same medieval form and merged so completely that no reference work can separate them. So half the meaning is settled and half is genuinely unrecoverable, which is unusual to be able to say so precisely.

How the name formed

  1. Several Germanic names merging into one in Norman French
  2. Geoffrey in England after the conquest
  3. Jeffrey as the American spelling
  4. Geoffery, with an extra vowel inserted

Two syllables in ordinary speech, though the extra vowel in this spelling suggests three. The g and the eo together produce a plain j, which is unpredictable from the letters and simply has to be learned.

Fashion outlook

Geoffery sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no coaching.
  • Geoff and Jeff are both available and both are complete names in their own right.
  • It carries a thousand years of continuous English use.
What to consider
  • Geoffrey and Jeffrey are both standard and this spelling will be corrected into one of them.
  • The inserted vowel suggests a syllable nobody actually says.
  • The opening is genuinely opaque and Americans will read it as it looks.
