Geoff
Masculine · “peace”
Geoff and Jeff are the same name, and which one you get tells you which country the family is from. Britain writes Geoff and America writes Jeff, almost without exception, and the two spellings have been diverging along that line for a century. The full name behind them is a puzzle: it is probably not one Germanic name but two or three that fell together in medieval French and were never separated again.

Where it comes from
From Two or three Germanic compounds ending in peace to Geoff
The story of Geoff
The merger happened in Normandy and it happened before anybody was writing etymologies down. Three separate Germanic compounds, all ending in the same peace element and all beginning with syllables that French pronunciation flattened into something similar, arrive at one name, and by the time the Normans bring it to England the distinction is gone. That is not a failure of scholarship: the medieval scribes did not distinguish them either, and there is nothing left to distinguish. What survives is a single very common name with a plural ancestry, which is more honest than most etymologies. The spelling split came much later, and it is a genuine transatlantic difference rather than a preference: British registers overwhelmingly show one form and American ones the other, and both are shortened the same way in speech.

peace
The second element is the Germanic word for peace and is certain. The first is not: at least three different Germanic names produce the same medieval form, one built on a word for territory, one on the word for god, and one on a word for traveler, and they merged so completely that no reference work can say which any given medieval Geoffrey descended from. So half the meaning is settled and half is genuinely unrecoverable.
How the name formed

JEFF
One syllable. The g and the eo together produce a plain j sound, which is unpredictable from the letters and has to be learned; it is one of the more opaque spellings in ordinary English use.

Fashion outlook
Geoff sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- One syllable, entirely familiar in sound, and about as unpretentious as an English man's name gets.
- The spelling is distinctive without being invented, which is a narrow band.
- It has a continuous thousand-year record in English.
- The spelling is genuinely opaque and Americans will read it as it looks before they learn better.
- It will be written Jeff by nearly everybody, including on official documents.
- It reads as a short form, and some people will keep asking for the full name.
