The story of Geno
Italian makes short forms by keeping the stressed end of a name rather than the front, so Eugenio yields Genio and Geno, and Gennaro yields Genna and Geno. Both parent names traveled to the United States with Italian emigration around the turn of the twentieth century, and in American mouths the long forms were often dropped entirely — a Geno on the certificate with a grandfather's Eugenio behind him and nothing written down. The name has stayed in Italian-American families ever since, carried as an inheritance rather than a fashion.

well born — or, of January
Two Italian names are trimmed to Geno. Eugenio is Greek eugenios, 'well born', from eu, 'good', and genos, 'birth'. Gennaro is Latin Ianuarius, 'of January', the month named for Janus, god of doorways and beginnings. Both are ordinary in Italy and neither reading has a claim on the other.

Soft g, as in gentle — Italian ge- is always soft. GEE-no with a hard g is a common American mistake, and Gino, the more familiar spelling, is said exactly the same way.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, four letters, and no ambiguity once the soft g is known.
- Sits on two long Italian names, either of which can serve as a formal version.
- Long established in Italian-American families rather than newly coined.
- The g is soft, and a good number of people will say it hard on first sight.
- Gino is the more common spelling of the same sound, so this one gets quietly corrected.
