Where it comes from

Our story of Gehrig

He had played more than two thousand consecutive games — through fractures, through fevers, through being knocked unconscious — when his coordination started going in his mid-thirties. He took himself out of the lineup in the spring, went to the Mayo Clinic in June, and was given a diagnosis of a degenerative nerve disease with no treatment and a short prognosis, on his thirty-sixth birthday. The following month the team held a day for him between games of a doubleheader, and he stood at a microphone in front of a full stadium and said he considered himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. He worked for the city parole commission for the remaining two years, visiting prisoners, until he was too weak to leave the house. The disease is now called by his name in America and by other names almost everywhere else.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The surname descends from a worn-down German personal name built on the element meaning a spear, of the same family as Gerhard and Gerald. How much of the original survives in this particular form is not recoverable; German surnames of this shape have usually lost most of their second element.

Pronouncing Gehrig

GAIR-ig

Two syllables with the stress at the front and a hard g at both ends. The h is silent and is there to mark the first vowel as long, which is a German spelling habit rather than an English one.

Gehrig sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 43 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Gehrig sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The person it points to is documented in exhaustive detail.
  • It is genuinely rare while being instantly recognizable to a great many people.
What to consider
  • The disease association is permanent and arrives alongside the career.
  • Garrig and Gehring will both be written for it.
  • It reads unmistakably as a surname, which suits some settings and not others.
