Gay is a name whose word moved. It was an ordinary American woman's name for two generations, meaning cheerful, and the adjective acquired a second and now dominant sense over the course of the twentieth century. The slang use is documented from the nineteen twenties in specific communities and became general knowledge much later, which is why the name lasted as long as it did.

How old is the name Gay?

Gay first appears in US birth records in 1883 — 142 years ago. The typical Gay alive today was born around 1936, making them about 89 years old. About 400 people named Gay are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Gay

The word also existed as a name by another road. In France, Gai and Gay appear as men's names and surnames from the medieval period, connected in some cases to the Latin name behind Gaius and in others to the adjective, and the surname traveled to England and America with them. So a family naming a daughter for cheerfulness and a family carrying an old French surname arrived at the same three letters from different directions. Both uses were unremarkable for centuries. What ended them was not a change in either name but a change in a word, which is the specific hazard of naming a child with something that is also current vocabulary.

Meaning

cheerful

The English adjective in the sense it carried when the name was given: light-hearted, bright, carefree. That sense is old, came into English from French, and was the only one available to a family naming a daughter in the nineteen thirties. The modern sense is a separate development within the same word and it is now the primary one.

How the name formed

  1. A French adjective meaning light-hearted
  2. Also a French surname with a separate history
  3. An ordinary American woman's name for two generations
  4. Ending as the word acquired a second sense

Gay sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1948, with 39 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Gay sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, no ambiguity, and nothing at all to explain about the sound.
  • It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
  • The original meaning is warm and entirely pleasant.
What to consider
  • The word now carries a meaning it did not carry when the name was given, and that meaning is dominant.
  • It is very firmly of the middle of the twentieth century.
  • Anybody carrying it now will be asked about it, which is a fact rather than a judgment.
