The w at the front of a Germanic name became a gu in French, which is why William and Guillaume are one name. The same shift turned Warin into Guarin and then Garin, so a name that looks nothing like its Germanic original is separated from it by a single regular sound change.

Where it comes from

The story of Garin

There is a medieval French epic about a Garin and it is about a feud that nobody wins. Garin le Loherain runs to twenty thousand lines and follows two families through generations of killing over an insult and a marriage, with truces made and broken, churches burned, and a sequence of revenge killings that each seem justified to the person committing them. It is far bleaker than the Charlemagne poems it sits beside, and it was popular for three hundred years. Nobody reads it now outside universities, which is a pity, because it is one of the most honest things medieval literature produced about what a feud actually does.

Meaning

Protection

The Germanic element warin, from a word about guarding or protecting, which stands at the front of Warner and Warren and behind the French Garnier. The shift from w to gu happened when Frankish words entered Old French and is completely regular, which is why the correspondence can be traced with confidence.

Fashion outlook

Garin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with no silent letters.
  • It has a documented Germanic and French line running back a thousand years.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while containing nothing unfamiliar.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Gary and Karen, both of which are far commoner.
  • Two stress patterns are current and the spelling settles neither.
  • It is closely dated to the second half of the last century in American use.
