The story of Garet
Malory's Arthurian compilation introduced several names that had not existed before in that form, and the usual explanation is that he was working from French sources with Welsh material behind them and made errors of transcription that turned into names. Gareth is the clearest candidate: there is a Welsh name that could plausibly have produced it through a French intermediary and a misread letter, and no independent evidence of the form before he used it. He was writing in prison, from memory and from whatever books he could get, which is not a situation that produces careful transcription. The name went into general English use in the nineteenth century with the rest of the Arthurian revival and has been ordinary in Wales ever since, which is a strange fate for a possible slip of the pen.
