Gail is the back end of Abigail, and it became a name of its own so completely that most people have forgotten where it came from. There is a second Gail as well — Gale, the wind, and an English surname from a word for a cheerful person — and the two have shared a sound in America for a century without ever being the same name.

How old is the name Gail?

Gail first appears in US birth records in 1882 — 143 years ago. The typical Gail alive today was born around 1939, making them about 86 years old. About 2,900 people named Gail are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Gail most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Gail

Abigail came into English use with the Reformation and then did something unfortunate: seventeenth-century plays used it so often for a lady's maid that abigail became a common noun for one, and the name went out of favor for two centuries. It returned in the twentieth, by which time the short form had a life of its own. Gail became enormously well used in mid-century America, entirely detached from the long name, which is why so many people called Gail were christened nothing else. It goes to boys as well, where it usually represents Gale rather than Abigail.

Meaning

my father is joy

Hebrew Avigayil joins av, father, with a word about rejoicing: my father is joy, or my father rejoices. The Abigail of the books of Samuel talks David out of a massacre with a speech that the text presents as the best argument anyone makes in the whole story, and she is one of the few women in the Hebrew Bible whose intelligence is the point of her scene. The meaning is settled. The wind and the surname are separate words and have nothing to do with it.

Gail sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1936, with 220 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Gail sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and four letters, understood instantly and never mispronounced.
  • Abigail is available as a formal long form with a documented and rather admirable biblical bearer.
  • It works for either child, and the two source names between them cover both.
What to consider
  • Gale and Gayle are equally common spellings and the name will be written all three ways.
  • It is very strongly associated with the mid twentieth century and dates a person closely.
  • A single syllable against a single-syllable surname lands abruptly, and the name gives nothing to soften it.
