Gael has two possible parents and one very clear present. It may be a shortening of the Breton Judicaël, a saint's name from the seventh century; it may be the word for the Gaelic-speaking peoples of Ireland and Scotland. What is certain is that Spanish-speaking America has adopted it wholesale in the last two decades, and it is now one of the fastest-climbing names in the United States.

How old is the name Gael?

Gael first appears in US birth records in 1935 — 90 years ago. The typical Gael alive today was born around 1956, making them about 69 years old. About 500 people named Gael are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Gael most popular?

Gael peaked in 1945, reaching #1660 nationally. Today it ranks #13208, 11,548 places below that high. See the whole 1945 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Gael

Judicaël ruled in Brittany in the seventh century, gave up his throne for a monastery, and was venerated afterward; the shortened Gaël became a Breton and then a French name. Its explosion in the Spanish-speaking world is much more recent and appears to owe a great deal to a very visible Mexican actor of the same name, whose career began in the late 1990s. The record here is unusually clear: the name is climbing fast, it is concentrated in the states with the largest Mexican American populations, and the children carrying it are almost all young.

Two readings compete. The Breton Gaël is a shortened form of Judicaël, a king and saint of Brittany, whose name joins elements meaning lord and generous. The other reading takes the word Gael, from the Irish Gaeil, the name the Irish and Scots use for their own people — itself borrowed, oddly, from a Welsh word for a raider. Neither can be assigned to a particular family.

Pronouncing Gael

gah-EL

Two syllables in Spanish, with the stress at the back and both vowels sounded separately — the a and the e do not merge. French says it closer to gah-EL as well, with the dieresis in the spelling there precisely to keep the vowels apart. English speakers often say GAYL in one syllable, which is the commonest slip.

Gael sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1947, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The Ermelinda test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gael's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ermelinda climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ermelinda's path sketches the road Gael is walking now.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, with no consonant that any speaker finds difficult.
  • It works in Spanish, French and English without changing a letter.
  • It is currently rising fast, which means a child will not be the only one but will be entirely current.
  • It has a documented Breton saint behind it if a family wants a history.
What to consider
  • English speakers collapse it into one syllable and produce Gail, a woman's name, which is the correction a child will make most often.
  • The dieresis belongs on it in French and will not survive an American form.
  • It is climbing quickly, so a boy born now will meet others of his age carrying it.
