Where it comes from

The story of Frona

American naming in the nineteenth century had a taste for long Greek and Latin abstractions — Sophronia, Philadelphia, Theodosia, Permelia — and almost all of them are gone. What survives of them is fragments: the last two syllables, cut loose, used as names in their own right, with the parent word forgotten inside a generation. That is how a great many short American women's names came to exist, and it is why so many of them cannot be explained: they are not words, they are the ends of words, and the front of the word was where the meaning lived. The quality this one names is worth recovering anyway — a Greek idea about self-knowledge that English has no single word for.

Sensible, self-controlled

The long name behind it, Sophronia, is Greek and built on a word about soundness of mind — good sense, moderation, the quality of knowing one's own limits. Whether a fragment cut from the end of it still carries that is a fair question, and some bearers may have no long form behind them at all.

Fashion outlook

Frona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, firm and carried by almost nobody alive.
  • The idea behind the long name is genuinely worth having.
  • The spelling is read correctly the first time.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Fiona, Frances or Fauna, which are all close by.
  • The long form is so far out of use that the connection has to be explained.
  • The name belongs entirely to one American era.
