Fredricka
Feminine · “Peaceful ruler”
Fredricka is the feminine of Frederick with the unstressed vowel taken out of the spelling: Frederica said at speed is Fredricka, and this version writes what is actually said. The ending is the part worth looking at. English has no way of its own to turn a man's name into a woman's, and has to borrow one every single time.

The story of Fredricka
Frederick reached English late, arriving with the Hanoverians rather than with the Normans, and the feminine came with it in Latin dress as Frederica. Every feminine ending English has is a loan: the -a of Frederica and Roberta from Latin, the -ine of Josephine and the -ette of Antoinette from French, the -elle of Danielle likewise. Old English had grammatical gender but never developed a suffix for making a woman's name out of a man's, so the language has been importing them for eight hundred years and has still not made one. The most consequential bearer was Swedish: Fredrika Bremer, a novelist who traveled the United States and wrote a book about it, argued at home for women's legal independence, and the association founded in her name after her death is still the oldest women's rights organization in Sweden.
Meaning
Peaceful ruler
Two Germanic elements: frid, peace, and ric, ruler or power, the same ric standing at the end of Roderick and Ulrich and at the front of Richard. Peace here means something narrower than the modern word, the order a strong lord keeps inside his own territory, which is enforcement rather than pacifism. A name claiming both halves of that was a statement about a family's standing, not about a child's temperament.

Fashion outlook
Fredricka sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A formal, unmistakably grown-up name with a full set of pet forms already attached to it.
- It is recognizable in German, Swedish, Dutch, Italian, French and Spanish with only small changes.
- The spelling matches the pronunciation, which the more traditional Frederica does not.
- Frederica is the expected spelling, so this one will be read as a slip and corrected by people trying to help.
- The name is long on paper for a child, and the everyday form will be chosen for her early by other people.
- Freddie is where most of these names end up, and Freddie is shared with several unrelated names.
