Where it comes from

The story of Fredrica

Prussia used the name the way England used Henry. Kings called Frederick ran the state for most of two centuries, the most famous of them a flute-playing insomniac who wrote French verse, corresponded with philosophers and fought nearly everybody; and the women of those courts carried the feminine, which spread through the German states and then across the Atlantic with the enormous German emigration of the nineteenth century. The spelling here drops a letter the English form keeps: when the Latin feminine ending is added, the ck of the men's name becomes a plain c, which is the ordinary rule for that ending and produces a name that looks softer than its source.

Meaning

Peaceful ruler

The Germanic elements are frid, peace, and ric, rule or power — so the name describes a ruler who keeps the peace rather than one who wins wars. The feminine adds a Latin ending and changes nothing.

Fashion outlook

Fredrica sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, concrete and unusually specific for a name.
  • It has native forms across Germany, Italy, Spain and Scandinavia.
  • It carries several short forms that sound nothing like each other.
What to consider
  • Frederica is the fuller spelling and hers will be lengthened to it.
  • It is long for American use and will be shortened within a week.
  • The name is closely associated with an older generation.
