Fredia is Frieda with one letter moved. In the German spelling the i sits in front of the d; here it has crossed to the other side of it. Nothing about the sound requires the change, and nothing about the sound resists it either, which is how a great many American respellings of German names came about.

How old is the name Fredia?

Fredia first appears in US birth records in 1901 — 124 years ago. The typical Fredia alive today was born around 1948, making them about 77 years old. About 1,300 people named Fredia are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Fredia

Freda and Frieda are a junction rather than a name. Three unrelated names collapse into them. Winifred is Welsh in origin and has nothing Germanic about it at all. Elfrida is Old English, built on different elements entirely. Frederica is the Germanic one, the feminine of Frederick. All three shorten toward the same two syllables, and once a family was calling a daughter Freda the longer name behind it could drop out of use inside a generation and never be written down again. So a Fredia today may descend from any of the three, or from the German name imported whole, and the record is not going to say which.

Meaning

peace

The Germanic element behind Frieda means peace, and it is the same element that closes Winifred and opens Frederick. Which of those the name came through in any given family is not recoverable, but the element itself is not in doubt.

FREE-dee-uh

Three syllables where Frieda has two, because the moved i opens a vowel that was closed before. That is the one thing the respelling genuinely changes.

Fredia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1948, with 73 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Fredia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is simple, positive and shared with several better-known names.
  • Every sound in it is easy and nothing in the spelling is unexpected once seen.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while sounding entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • Frieda and Freda are both standard, so this spelling is corrected constantly.
  • The extra syllable it creates is not obvious from the page, and strangers will guess.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
