Fredericka

The Latin feminine of this name does not need a k and this spelling adds one. Frederica is the form Latin and Italian produce and it is perfectly regular; putting a k in front of the ending imports a Germanic letter into a Romance construction, which is why the result looks slightly at odds with itself.

Where it comes from

The story of Fredericka

The emperor most associated with the name drowned in a river on his way to a crusade, in armor, in shallow water, and Germany refused to believe it. Legend put him asleep inside a mountain with his beard growing through the table, waiting to return when the country needed him, and the story was still being repeated seriously seven hundred years later — it was used as propaganda by regimes that had no business invoking it. His army fell apart when he died and most of them went home. A drowning in a Turkish stream produced one of the most durable pieces of European folklore.

Meaning

Fredericka sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1947, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Fredericka sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent once the two Germanic elements are pointed out.
  • It offers short forms from either end with quite different characters.
  • It is genuinely rare while every part of it is easy to say.
What to consider
  • Frederica is the standard Latin form and this gets corrected.
  • Four syllables is long and most people will shorten it immediately.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
