Fredda

Feminine · “peaceful ruler”

Fredda doubles a consonant to turn a man's clipping into a woman's name, which is a small and rather elegant trick. Fred plus a vowel would read as a masculine Latin form; Fred with a doubled d and a vowel reads as feminine to English eyes, and the difference is one letter that nobody pronounces. The full name behind it belonged to a medieval ruler who kept a menagerie.

Where it comes from

The story of Fredda

Frederick the Second was Holy Roman Emperor and king of Sicily in the thirteenth century, and his contemporaries called him the wonder of the world, mostly with alarm. He kept a traveling menagerie including an elephant and a giraffe, wrote a serious treatise on falconry that is still cited by ornithologists, conducted the crusade he was excommunicated for not conducting and got Jerusalem back by negotiation rather than by fighting, and was excommunicated again for it. He was rumored to have conducted experiments on children, which is almost certainly hostile invention. He held a court where Arabic, Greek, Latin and Italian scholars worked side by side, and the poetry written at it is the beginning of Italian literature.

Meaning

peaceful ruler

The Germanic compound behind Frederick joins the words for peace and for rule, and the reading is settled. This name is built on the clipped form rather than the full one, so it carries the meaning at one remove. The doubled consonant is an English orthographic device with no bearing on the sense at all.

How the name formed

  1. A Germanic compound of peace and rule
  2. Frederick across the German and English-speaking worlds
  3. Fred as an independent short form
  4. Fredda, feminised with a doubled consonant

FRED-uh

Two syllables, stress on the first. The doubled d keeps the first vowel short; with a single d the spelling would suggest a long vowel and a quite different name.

Fashion outlook

Fredda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, clear and completely unambiguous once heard.
  • Freddie is available and is currently one of the more fashionable unisex short forms.
  • It carries a genuine Germanic meaning at one remove.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Freda or Frieda on a first introduction.
  • The clipping it is built on reads male to most people.
  • It is firmly of the earlier twentieth century.
