Francene
Feminine · “the Frenchman”
The English pair Frances and Francis differ by one letter and nobody can remember which is which. Francene sidesteps the problem entirely: the -ene ending is unmistakably a woman's, requires no rule to be recalled, and removes an ambiguity that has been annoying English speakers for four hundred years.

The story of Francene
The saint who made the name wrote what may be the first real poem in Italian. His canticle addresses the sun as a brother, the moon and stars as sisters, and the wind, water, fire and earth in turn, ending with a verse about death that he added when he was dying — and he wrote it in the spoken language rather than in Latin, at a point when almost nothing serious was written that way. It was meant to be sung by people who could not read. It is still one of the earliest surviving texts in the language.
Meaning
the Frenchman, at one remove
The base name began as a nickname about nationality rather than as a name, and the sense is not in dispute. The ending contributes nothing beyond marking the form as a woman's.

Fashion outlook
Francene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It removes an ambiguity that the standard pair creates.
- Fran sits inside it as a short form that works in any register.
- The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
- Francine is the commoner spelling and this gets corrected.
- The -ene ending dates it firmly to the middle of the last century.
- The nationality behind the base name is invisible without explanation.
