From Florentia to Floye
The story of Floye
In Dombey and Son, the neglected daughter of the house is Florence, and her small brother — who is the only person in the book who loves her properly — calls her Floy. He is dying through much of the novel and the name is essentially his; after his death it stays attached to her as the marker of the one relationship she had. The book was serialised to enormous audiences in the eighteen-forties, and the child's death scene was one of the most famous passages of the century. The name appears in American birth records in the decades following, in a quantity that is hard to explain otherwise, and mostly in the South. Whether a given family took it from the novel, from a neighbor or from the air is exactly the thing the record never says.

probably a short form of Florence or Flora
Both parents descend from the Latin word for a flower, so the general sense is secure even where the particular name is not. A Welsh word for grey lies behind the similar-looking Floyd and is unrelated to this. The final e is silent and marks the word as a name.

One syllable. The final e is completely silent and does not lengthen anything, because the oy was already a diphthong.

Fashion outlook
Floye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- One syllable is short, clear and carries across a room.
- The oy spelling is unambiguous, which very few English vowel spellings are.
- It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
- Floy and Floyd will both be written for it.
- The silent letter has to be given aloud every time.
- It reads as belonging firmly to one generation and one region.
