Florrie
Feminine · “flowering”
Florrie is a pet form of the Florence family, and the city behind it answers to two names that are the same name. Latin called it the flowering one; Italian wore that down to something quite different; and English, which took its version from Latin through French, ended up with a form the inhabitants would not recognize. The coin the city minted put a flower on one side and gave a word to half of Europe.

The story of Florrie
In the thirteenth century the city began minting a gold coin of a fixed weight and purity, with a lily on one face, and because the purity was reliable the coin was accepted everywhere. Within a century it was the standard international currency of Europe, and half a dozen countries were minting imitations of it and calling them by the city's name. The English florin, the Dutch guilder's abbreviation, the Hungarian forint and the Aruban florin all descend from that coin, and the Hungarian currency still carries the name today. A single city's money became a unit of account across a continent for three hundred years, and the reason was not power but consistency: everybody trusted the weight.
Meaning
flowering
The Latin name of the city means flowering or prosperous, and the reading is not in dispute. As a personal name it is the city taken directly, which was a nineteenth-century habit, and the -ie ending is an affectionate English addition with no sense of its own. Where the parent is Flora or Florida instead, the meaning is close but not identical, and the pet form serves all of them.
How the name formed
- A Latin city name meaning flowering
- A gold coin that became an international standard

FLOR-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the doubled r keeping the o short. Written with one r the vowel would run long and the name would be a different sound, which is one of the few places English doubling does audible work.

The trade-off

- It is very firmly of the late nineteenth century and has only begun to return in Britain.
- Florence, Flora and Florida are all possible parents and the spelling records none of them.
