Florinda
Feminine · “flower”
The -linda that closes Florinda, Belinda and Rosalinda is not the Spanish word for pretty, however much it looks like it. It is a Germanic element, brought into Spain by the Visigoths, meaning something closer to soft or supple — and possibly, in its oldest sense, the linden wood a shield was made from. Spanish absorbed it so completely that the resemblance to lindo now feels like the explanation.

The story of Florinda
Spanish legend gives a Florinda a large role in the fall of Visigothic Spain: she is the daughter of Count Julian, and the story holds that King Roderic's treatment of her led her father to open the door to the invasion of 711. Historians treat the tale as later invention, and she is often called La Cava in the ballads. Whatever its truth, the story kept the name in Spanish literature for centuries. American records carry Florinda from the 1890s, arriving with Spanish-speaking and Italian families, and it belongs to an older generation here.
Meaningscholars disagree
flower, with a Germanic ending
The front is the Latin flor, a flower, which is not in doubt. The ending is Germanic lind, and its own meaning is argued — soft or tender is the usual reading, with a serpent and the linden tree both proposed as the older sense. What it is not, despite appearances, is the Spanish adjective lindo, pretty, which came into Spanish much later and by a different route.
