Floria comes off the Latin word for a flower, and the goddess who carried it had the least respectable festival in the Roman calendar. The Floralia ran for six days, involved theatrical performances that other Roman writers found embarrassing, and was popular in exactly the way that made conservative senators complain. It is also, though almost nobody knows it, the first name of the heroine of one of the most performed operas ever written.

Where it comes from

The story of Floria

The Floralia was held at the end of April, and the accounts of it are unusually vivid because Roman moralists kept writing them down disapprovingly. There were games, there was a great deal of drinking, the crowd wore bright colors instead of the usual white, and the theatrical performances were, by the standards of Roman public entertainment, extremely direct. One well-known anecdote has a stern senator attending and the audience refusing to continue until he left. The goddess herself was old, older than most of the Olympian imports, and belonged to the layer of Roman religion concerned with crops and seasons rather than with personalities. The operatic Floria is a different matter: a singer in Rome in eighteen hundred, whose first name appears in the libretto and almost never on a poster, because the surname alone is what the world calls her.

Meaning

flower

From the Latin word for a flower, through the name of the goddess of flowering plants and the spring. The reading is settled and about as direct as a name meaning can be. The -ia ending is the ordinary Latin feminine and adds nothing beyond marking the word as a name rather than a noun, which Latin needed to do and English does not.

Floria sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1939, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Floria sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is direct, pleasant and needs no explaining to anybody.
  • It is a genuine Latin name with an unbroken record rather than a modern flower name.
  • Flo and Ria are two very different short forms and both stand alone.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Gloria or Flora on a first introduction almost every time.
  • The flower association is immediate and some people will find it decorative rather than substantial.
  • It is very rare in American use now and will need spelling out.
