The doubled t in this ending is Italian, and Italian means it. In that language a doubled consonant is held longer than a single one and the difference changes words; English copies the spelling and drops the length entirely, so the second t here is a letter without a job.

Where it comes from

The story of Floretta

The goddess the front element belongs to had a festival that Rome found embarrassing. The Floralia ran for several days at the end of April, involved hares and goats let loose in the circus, and was performed by actresses who by long custom stripped at the audience's demand — a detail Roman moralists wrote about at length and with obvious relish. Cato is supposed to have walked out of it so the games could continue without him watching. The goddess herself was ancient, older than most of the imported Greek pantheon, and her priest was one of the senior religious officials of the state.

Meaning

Fashion outlook

Floretta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete, pleasant and needs no explaining.
  • It offers short forms from either end with very different characters.
  • The rhythm is even and the name carries well at length.
What to consider
  • The diminutive ending means the name is literally a small version of another.
  • Floretta and Florette both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
