Where it comes from

The story of Filip

Philip was a Macedonian royal name — the father of Alexander carried it — and it entered Christian use through one of the twelve apostles and one of the seven deacons in Acts. That double route made it standard across Europe. The f-spellings belong to the Slavic and Nordic languages, which never took the Greek ph: Filip in Polish, Czech, Serbian, Croatian, Swedish and Danish. It reaches United States records with families from all of those countries.

Meaning

lover of horses

Greek Philippos joins philos, 'loving, dear', to hippos, 'horse'. The reading is transparent and undisputed. Horses meant cavalry and therefore status in the Greek world, so this was a name of rank rather than a whimsy. The ph in the English spelling represents the Greek letter phi; Polish, Czech, Swedish and Serbian all write the f they actually say.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Filip went to 42 boys in 2025, but Philip and Phillip are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,040, which makes it the 315th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,626 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,642 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 40,668 for Filip itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One of the most widely used names in Europe, recognized everywhere without explanation.
  • Fil and Phil are ready short forms, one for each spelling.
  • The spelling is phonetic in every language that uses it except English.
What to consider
  • Philip is the standard English spelling and this one will be corrected on forms.
  • The first vowel is long in Slavic languages and short in English, so the name shifts.
  • Filip, Philip, Filipp and Phillip all circulate and get confused.
