Fernande is the French feminine of Fernand, the form France made from Ferdinand. Its best-remembered bearer chose it for herself: a young woman born Amélie Lang worked as an artist's model in Montmartre as Fernande Olivier, and for several years she was Pablo Picasso's companion and one of his most painted faces.

Where it comes from

The story of Fernande

Amélie Lang was born in Paris in 1881, left an unhappy early marriage, and was posing for painters under the name Fernande Olivier when she met Picasso at the Bateau-Lavoir, the ramshackle studio building in Montmartre. She runs through his Rose Period, and in 1909 he modeled her head in clay; cast in bronze, the Head of a Woman (Fernande) is usually counted among the first Cubist sculptures. The relationship ended in 1912, but the name she had chosen stayed hers, and it is the name museum labels still carry.

Meaningscholars disagree

journey and daring, or peace and daring

Fernande traces to Ferdinand, a Germanic name whose first element is argued over: one reading takes it from a word for a journey, another from a word for peace or protection. The second element is usually read as daring or bold. The feminine ending is French.

Fernande sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 34 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Fernande sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real, specific artistic history stays with this exact spelling.
  • Clearly feminine in French, with Fernanda as a familiar cousin in Spanish-speaking families.
  • Two syllables with the stress on the second.
What to consider
  • Many Americans will say or type Fernanda, and some will read it as the surname Fernandes; expect to correct both.
  • An art-minded reader will think of Picasso first, and his treatment of the women around him is now discussed as critically as his work. The name was hers before it was his subject.
