Fayetta
Feminine · “a fay”
Fayetta is built on a word that used to mean something much larger than it does now. A fay was not originally a small winged creature at the bottom of a garden — it was one of the Fates, the powers who decided how a life would go, and the word came into English from the Latin for them.

Where it comes from
From the Latin Fates give Old French its word for a fay to Fayetta
The story of Fayetta
The shrinking of the fairies is a documented piece of English cultural history. In medieval romance they are dangerous, adult and roughly human-sized: they steal children, hold knights for years and rule kingdoms under hills. Shakespeare made some of them small; the eighteenth century made them charming; and by the Victorian period they were the size of a thumb and lived in flowers. The word came down with them. So a name built on this root reaches back past the flower fairies to something considerably more serious, and the family who chose it in 1900 may well have had the serious version in mind.

a fay, with an Italian ending
The Latin fata, the Fates, became the Old French fae, which English took as fay and then extended into fairy — a word that originally meant enchantment rather than a creature. Medieval fays are not small: Morgan le Fay is a queen and a sorceress. The word shrank in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries into the winged garden variety, and the older sense survives only in phrases and in names. The ending here is one of the Italian and French endings American naming used freely on any front it liked.

Fashion outlook
Fayetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

- It will be heard as Fayette, Loretta and Henrietta by people meeting it once.
- The compound has no settled meaning, only a front with a good history.
- It is firmly of the first half of the last century.
