Where it comes from

The story of Faviola

The saint the name belongs to did something genuinely new. A Roman noblewoman of the fourth century, twice married and once divorced in a way the church disapproved of, she gave away an enormous fortune and used part of it to found what appears to be the first public hospital in the West — a place where the sick poor were brought in off the streets and nursed, rather than a military infirmary or a household arrangement. Contemporaries wrote about it as an astonishing thing to do. The institution she invented is now so ordinary that the invention is invisible.

Fashion outlook

Faviola sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Viola and Fabi both sit inside it as complete short forms.
  • The rhythm is long and even and carries well.
  • It has a genuinely remarkable historical bearer behind it.
What to consider
  • Fabiola is the standard spelling and this one gets corrected.
  • Four syllables is long and most people will shorten it.
  • The stress falls where English speakers do not expect it.
