A fantasia is a piece of music that refuses to follow a form. Composers have used the word for four centuries to mean exactly that — a work in which the writer does what the material suggests rather than what a sonata or a fugue would require — and it is one of the few musical terms that describes an absence of rules.

How old is the name Fantasia?

Fantasia first appears in US birth records in 1979 — 46 years ago. The typical Fantasia alive today was born around 1997, making them about 28 years old. About 1,800 people named Fantasia are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Fantasia

It is one of very few abstract nouns taken as a name with nothing changed. English usually adjusts a word before giving it to a child — an ending added, a letter swapped, something to mark it as a person — and the virtue names of the seventeenth century are the main exception. This one arrives whole, spelled exactly as the dictionary spells it, and its Italian ending happens to look like a woman's name already, which is presumably why it needed no adjustment. The word was doing the work of a name before anybody used it as one.

Meaning

imagination, fancy

An Italian and Latin noun descended from a Greek word about appearing or being shown. English fantasy and phantom come from the same root, which is why the family carries both delight and unease.

Fantasia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 167 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Fantasia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tasia sits inside it as a short form with a completely different register.
  • The meaning is transparent and needs no explaining at all.
  • The rhythm is long and the name carries well.
What to consider
  • It is an ordinary English word and will be read as one.
  • The pronunciation is unsettled between the English and Italian readings.
  • A very well-known animated film carries the word and follows it around.
