The story of Fanchon
George Sand's novel La Petite Fadette, published in 1849, follows Fanchon Fadet, a sharp-tongued girl of the Berry countryside. Adapted for the stage, it became Fanchon the Cricket in English, a role the actress Maggie Mitchell played for decades from the 1860s on. In 1915 Mary Pickford starred in a silent film of the same title. French also gave the name to a small kerchief folded and tied under the chin, the fanchon, and nineteenth-century English fashion writing borrowed the word for a small bonnet.
