Falicia writes the first vowel of a Latin name as it is said rather than as it is spelled, which is what happens to a name that travels by ear. The Latin word behind it was also a Roman label for a corner of Arabia, and it was a report on the weather.

Where it comes from

The story of Falicia

Roman geographers divided Arabia into three: Arabia Petraea, the part around Petra that they governed; Arabia Deserta, the interior; and Arabia Felix, the south-western corner that is now Yemen. Felix here means fertile rather than happy. The highlands there catch monsoon rain, which made agriculture possible on a scale the rest of the peninsula could not match, and the region was rich on frankincense, myrrh and the trade route to India — the Romans knew it as the source of luxuries and mounted an expedition to take it that failed badly. The great dam at Marib, which irrigated the area for something over a thousand years, eventually broke, and the collapse is remembered in the Qur'an.

Meaning

lucky

From the Latin felix, which covers lucky, fruitful and happy at once — closer to fortunate than to cheerful. It was a Roman surname before it was a given name and belonged to several early saints.

Fashion outlook

Falicia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • The meaning is documented and unambiguous.
What to consider
  • Felicia, Phalicia and Felisha will all be written for it.
  • The changed vowel is nearly inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud.
  • It reads as a phonetic respelling rather than as a variant.
