Where it comes from

The story of Faithe

Rome personified the keeping of promises and gave her a temple on the Capitol, and what was kept there was not relics but documents: treaties with other states, and records of agreements, stored under the protection of the thing they depended on. The priests who served her covered their right hands with white cloth to sacrifice, because the right hand was the hand you gave on a bargain — the handshake as a binding act is older than any of the modern countries that use it. The Roman conception was practical rather than devotional. Fides meant that an agreement held because both sides expected it to, and a state that broke its word lost something real. The English word has drifted a long way toward belief and away from reliability, which is a change in the word rather than in the idea; the older sense survives in phrases like in good faith and in bad faith.

Meaning

faith; trust kept

From the Latin fides, which meant good faith in the practical sense of keeping one's word, and which also gives English fidelity, confide, perfidy, affidavit and fiancé. The added e at the end of this spelling is silent and carries nothing.

One syllable. The added e is silent and does not lengthen anything, because the vowel was already long; it marks the word as a name and nothing else.

Fashion outlook

Faithe sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is an ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • One syllable is quick, clear and carries across a room.
  • The meaning is plain and needs no explaining in any setting.
What to consider
  • Faith is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
  • The added letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It is an abstract noun, and some bearers find that a lot to carry.
