Faigy
Feminine · “bird”
Faigy comes from the Yiddish naming world of Central and Eastern Europe, where Feige and Feigel were carried by generations of women long before the name reached American records. It keeps the warm -y ending that English already knows from Abby and Molly, sitting on a first syllable that rhymes with day. It has held a quiet, steady place here for decades rather than riding any wave.

The story of Faigy
Faigy is one of a cluster of Yiddish women's names — Feige, Faiga, Feigel, Faigele — that circulated among Ashkenazi Jewish families in German-speaking lands and then across Poland, Lithuania, Hungary and Ukraine. Names of this kind were often paired with a Hebrew name for religious use, and Feige was habitually matched with Tzipporah, so that a girl might be Tzipporah in the synagogue and Feigy at home. The diminutive endings -el and -y were how Yiddish showed affection, and here the affectionate form became the legal one. Immigration carried the whole family of spellings to the United States, where Faigy took hold in Yiddish-speaking Orthodox communities and remains concentrated in the New York and New Jersey area today.

bird, or fig — the two readings compete
The older German-language explanation traces Feige to Middle High German vīge, 'fig.' The living Jewish tradition reads it as 'bird,' from Yiddish feygl / feygele, and this is reflected in long practice: Feige and its diminutives have served for centuries as the Yiddish companion name to Hebrew Tzipporah, which means 'bird.' Both readings are seriously held, and the bird association is the one most families use.

The Kaili test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Faigy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kaili climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kaili's path sketches the road Faigy is walking now.
Faigy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Phonetic on the page for English speakers: two syllables, both of them ordinary sounds, with a first syllable that rhymes with day.
- Sits in a naming tradition that has been continuously in use for centuries, with a Hebrew companion name, Tzipporah, already attached to it.
- Steady rather than trend-driven — it has held its place across decades without a fashion spike behind it.
- Comes with an established affectionate form, Faigele, and a fuller form, Faiga, if a more formal version is ever wanted.
- The spelling competes with Faiga, Faigie, Feige and Feigy, all in real use. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and to see the other versions in print.
- Strangers reading it cold sometimes soften the g to a 'j' sound. It is a small, quickly fixed correction, but a lifelong one.
- Faigy is itself a diminutive, so there is no longer formal version unless you record Faiga or Tzipporah on the certificate alongside it.
- The name is strongly associated with Yiddish-speaking Orthodox communities and clusters heavily in a couple of states. Outside those circles it is likely to be the only one in the room, which some families want and others weigh carefully.
