The name is attached to a tumour. James Ewing, working in New York in the early twentieth century, described a bone cancer in young people that everybody had been calling something else, showed that it was a distinct disease with its own behavior under the microscope, and published; it has been called after him ever since. He was one of the founders of cancer research as a discipline in America and spent decades arguing that the field needed its own institutions rather than being a corner of general pathology, which it now has. A great many diseases carry the name of the person who first described them, and it is one of the few forms of immortality that medicine hands out.
