Two men carrying this name are remembered together, and the way they are told apart is unusual. Both were English missionaries from Northumbria who went to preach among the Saxons of the continent; both were killed on the same day, in the same place, by people who feared that they would convert the local chief; and because they had the same name, the tradition distinguishes them by their hair — the Black Ewald and the White Ewald, which is how they appear in the records, the calendars and the paintings. They are the patrons of Westphalia, and their names are among the very few Anglo-Saxon ones still in ordinary use in Germany.
