The story of Eustace
A Roman officer out hunting sees a stag turn and face him with a crucifix shining between its antlers, and a voice speaks from it. That is the founding vision of the saint this name belongs to, and it is the reason he was patron of hunters across medieval Europe, with a great church in Paris and an enormous cult. Several centuries later the identical story was attached to a Belgian nobleman, Hubert, whose own legend had originally contained nothing of the kind; Hubert became the hunting patron people now name, and his version is the one on the bottles of a German liqueur. The older saint's cult faded, and modern scholarship regards his life as legendary — the church removed his feast from the general calendar on exactly those grounds. The stag, however, is still on the label.

Two Greek names have fallen together here. One joins good to a word for ears of grain, giving something like fruitful; the other joins good to a word about standing firm. Both existed, the medieval Latin forms are almost identical, and no one can say which a given bearer descends from.

Fashion outlook
Eustace sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is genuinely old and genuinely rare at the same time, which is a difficult combination to find.
- The eu at the front is a piece of Greek English still uses productively.
- Stacy comes off it, which is a fact most people find surprising.
- It reads as distinctly old-fashioned and English to American ears.
- Eustis and Eustice are both recorded and will be written for it.
- The meaning is contested, so it has to be given with a qualification.
