The story of Eulalia
Eulalia of Merida is one of the earliest Spanish martyrs, a girl said to have argued with a Roman official and been executed for it in the early fourth century; a Latin hymn about her survives from within a century of the events, which is very early. A second Eulalia is the patron of Barcelona. That made the name common across Spain and Catalonia and, from there, across Latin America. It reaches United States records with Spanish-speaking families, and its American record is strongest in the late nineteenth century.
Meaning
sweetly speaking; well-spoken
Greek eulalos joins eu, 'good, well', to lalein, 'to talk' — the compound means speaking well or pleasantly. The same eu- opens Eugene, Eudora and euphony; the same lalein gives glossolalia. The reading is documented and undisputed, and it is unusually specific: a name about how somebody talks.

The trade-off
- An exact and unusual meaning — about speech rather than beauty or virtue.
- Lali, Laia and Eula are three ready short forms in different languages.
- A documented early Christian record going back to the fourth century.
- Four syllables and an unfamiliar opening mean it will be spelled out constantly in the United States.
- The English and Spanish pronunciations of the first two syllables are quite different.
- It carries a strong late-nineteenth-century flavor in American records.
