Where it comes from

Our story of Euell

Our story of Euell runs through the one man who made it known. Euell Gibbons, born in Texas, learned young to find food growing wild, and in middle age he wrote Stalking the Wild Asparagus, a book about cattails, dandelions, acorns and berries that treated a walk in the country as a trip to the pantry. Later, in a run of cereal commercials, he asked television viewers whether they had ever eaten a pine tree, and added that many parts are edible. For a name with no recorded origin, it is a fine thing to have been carried by a man who knew where everything came from.

Euell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 25 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Euell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Its best-known bearer is remembered warmly, as the writer who taught Americans to find food growing wild.
  • Short and soft, with an easy sound once heard.
  • Almost no one else carries it, so it stays distinctive.
What to consider
  • Few people will guess the spelling from the sound; expect Ewell, Yule or Uel on forms, and plan to spell it aloud.
  • Anyone who remembers the cereal commercials may bring up the pine tree; it is an affectionate joke, not a cruel one.
