Where it comes from

Our story of Euel

The springs at Ewell in Surrey are the source of the Hogsmill, a short chalk stream that joins the Thames a few miles downriver. It is an unremarkable watercourse except for one summer in the eighteen-fifties, when a painter spent five months sitting on its bank near Ewell working eleven hours a day on the background of a picture of a drowning woman. He complained in letters about flies, wind, a bull in the field and being threatened with trespass; the plants along the bank went into the painting species by species, in the order they flowered, which is why the picture contains flowers that are not in season at the same time. The model for the figure was painted separately, lying in a bath in a London studio heated by lamps underneath, and she caught a serious cold when the lamps went out.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It may be a phonetic spelling of the surname Ewell, which comes from an Old English word for a river's source; it may be a rare biblical name; or it may be an independent build of the kind the period produced in quantity. The record holds no evidence for any of the three.

Euel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Euel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
  • The eu at the front is unusual enough to make it memorable.
What to consider
  • Ewell, Eual and Uel are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
  • Nothing is documented about its origin, so the meaning question has three possible answers and no evidence.
