Where it comes from

The story of Esteven

Estevanico was a Moroccan, enslaved, and one of four survivors of a Spanish expedition that was wrecked on the Gulf coast. The four of them walked, over about eight years, from Texas across the southwest to the Pacific side of Mexico, living among a succession of peoples, acquiring a reputation as healers, and surviving on the strength of it. He was the group's principal communicator, learning languages faster than the others. He was later sent ahead on another expedition and killed at a Zuni pueblo. The Spanish accounts name him last in every list of the four and describe him as property throughout, which is the shape of the record.

Esteven sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 32 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Esteven sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Steve is available as a short form and needs no explaining anywhere.
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in one word.
  • It works in English and Spanish-speaking households with only a shift of stress.
What to consider
  • Esteban and Steven are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented for the hybrid form, so the meaning question belongs to the older name.
