Enrigue
Masculine
Enrigue differs from a very common Spanish name by one letter, and the letter is part of a neat piece of Spanish spelling machinery. Spanish uses a silent u to keep c and g hard in front of e and i, and this spelling swaps which one is doing the work.

Our story of Enrigue
Spanish has the same problem English has: c and g go soft in front of e and i. Spanish solved it more tidily. To keep a hard k sound, it writes qu with a silent u, which is why Enrique, quiero and queso have no w sound anywhere in them. To keep a hard g, it writes gu with a silent u, which is why guerra and guitarra do the same job. And when the u really should be pronounced, Spanish puts two dots over it to say so. The whole system is regular, explicit and learnable in a morning, which English spelling has never once managed about anything.

Enrique is the Spanish form of Henry, whose Germanic elements are documented. Whether this spelling is a respelling, a transcription error preserved in the record, or an independent name is not recorded.

Fashion outlook
Enrigue sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name behind it is one of the most established in the Spanish-speaking world.
- Three open syllables carry well and are easy to hear across a room.
- It is genuinely rare on paper while being entirely familiar in sound.
- Enrique is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
- The changed letter arguably changes the sound, so the correction is not only about spelling.
- No origin is documented for this form, so the meaning question belongs to the standard name.
