The story of Emerick
Emeric of Hungary was the son of King Stephen, the first Christian king of the Hungarians, and he died in a hunting accident before he could succeed; both father and son were canonized, and the name became Hungary's own as Imre. Meanwhile Normandy carried Amalric to England as Emery, and German kept Emmerich. Emerick with a k is the English and American spelling, and its record here sits mostly in the early twentieth century with German and Hungarian emigration.
Meaning
work-power; ruler of the household
Germanic Amalric joins amal, 'work, labor', to ric, 'power, rule'. The reading is documented, and the same amal stands behind Amelia and Emeline. German gave Emmerich, English gave Emery and Emerick, Hungarian gave Imre. All are the same compound with different national spellings.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
